In fact, the advanced manufacturing industry has experienced a growth since the recession, creating a need for reliable, adept workers. Enter an alternative learning experience: training programs.
WHAT ARE TRAINING PROGRAMS?
Simply put, training programs are designed to train individuals in a specific set of skills. Depending on the facility, training programs are generally more hands-on, providing trainees with the ability to identify industry-specific tools and terms, diagnose and solve problems, and learn how to navigate common challenges associated with that field. An example of a training program includes a Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) pathway, which would explain many aspects (as well as provide hands-on training) of an HVAC technician so that individuals would be prepared for an entry-level job when the program is completed.
A qualified training facility will also prepare individuals to receive necessary certifications related to their chosen field. These certifications are a powerful tool to have for anyone looking for an industrial career.
WHY ARE CERTIFICATIONS IMPORTANT?
Certifications are important because they show potential employers that an individual is competent through a measurement of skills and knowledge. They represent professional growth, showing a candidate has ambition and is willing to put in the hard work to learn more and succeed. Certifications pay off too; in a study conducted by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, they add an average of 25 percent in earnings overtime.
When it comes to advanced manufacturing and other related industries, the most widely known and accepted certifications are from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). NCCER was developed in 1996 with support from more than 125 construction CEOs, who aimed to revolutionize training in their industry. Today, the NCCER curriculum is applied to over 70 craft areas and represents the industry standards for training and education.
HOW TO SUCCEED IN A TRAINING PROGRAM
Similar to school or a job, a training program will only be successful if an individual holds themselves accountable. Luckily, with the right preparation, it can be accomplished. If you are thinking about signing up or are already registered for a training program, these tips can help ensure you stay motivated and on track for a successful career:
- Look at these training programs as if they are your jobs. In a way, they are a job, an investment in your future career. By taking your assignments and responsibilities seriously, you show that you are reliable, dedicated and hard-working – all good signs for a potential employer.
- Listen to your trainer, and ask questions if something is not clear. By actively participating in your trainings, you will absorb more information and will be more likely to remember them. Asking questions shows your willingness to engage, and by clearly understanding what you’re learning, you will be able to speak about your industry intelligently.
- Use your training program to practice and master essential soft skills, such as effective time management, organization, leadership and teamwork. According to a recent study, over half of hiring managers believe soft skills are more important than technical expertise (hard skills). While hard skills may land you the interview, portraying valuable soft skills will get you the job. Utilize this time in the program to perfect them.
- Take a business class. Yes, really! Having the technical training and mastering soft skills will only take you so far. By understanding the business side of a company, you open yourself up to creative problem solving, contract negotiation, principles of salesmanship and more. Learning essential business functions and responsibilities may also leverage your career in ways you didn’t think possible.
- Develop a relationship not just with your trainer, but with others who may provide valuable opportunities to you. Networking has never been more important; the connections you make now can produce a career for you in the future. If your training program offers it, take advantage of Career Center counselors.
