SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY (January 9, 2017) – Happy New Year! My name is Faye Lao, and I am your friendly, neighborhood Human Resources Business Partner, Organizational Development Workforce Training Consultant for Chaffey College.

 

But for now, I will also be your own personal and business psychic for a brief moment, and give you the most powerful new year prediction you can embrace for 2017! Ready?

 

The year 2017, in the world of numerology, adds up to 2+0+1+7 = 10. 10 reduces down to 1. And 1 in numerology means “new beginnings,” or more notably, “CHANGE!”

 

You may wonder, esoteric information aside, how does this bit of trivia translate into business terms? In my world as an HR consultant and educator, my business clients, students, and employees are often faced with the same challenges when I ask them, “What is the single most challenging aspect of your work that you face daily?” Invariably, they reply that their biggest workplace challenge is dealing with PEOPLE! Personalities, attitudes, moods, negativity, lack of communication, lack of productivity, lack of cooperation, lack of motivation, lack of compliance…The list goes on, but you get the idea.

 

 

Amidst heavy sighs, eye rolls, slumped shoulders and frowning faces, my clients will often counter with their own questions, “Why are my employees acting this way? Is it my fault? Is it my boss’ fault? How do I fix my employees? How do I get them to cooperate and do their jobs?”

 

The answer is never simple. As many people this time of year do, our new year resolutions may sound like this: “lose weight,” “get healthier,” “organize the house,” or “make more money.” And like most people, we would like a magic pill that will make us lose weight and get healthy, the magic storage unit to get organized, and the near impossible winning numbers to the lotto.

 

But of course, we know that such magical quick fixes are rare. The way to accomplish these common new year goals and resolutions lies in creating daily healthy and organized habits.

 

In much the same way, an organization that wishes to fix their employee relations and productivity problems, while building teamwork and collaboration, also needs to create healthy habits that are ingrained through conscious CULTURE CHANGE.

 

People do not always change old habits and ways of operating overnight by mandate or policy. Good working habits that encourage effective communications, teamwork, and collaboration come from the combined efforts of the leadership team setting a positive example and establishing a culture that frequently communicates and promotes healthy working principles.
